Lakewood Middle School replaces an aging school on the same site with a new building designed to accommodate 1,100 students. Sustainability and community benefits were the guiding principles that informed its design, including the selection of materials. The structure is a hybrid of dowel-laminated timber, glulam, heavy timber decking and other materials. The architect, Mahlum, and the structural engineer, KPFF collaborated with Whole Trees Structures to utilize dozens of large white oak trees on the site as structural round timber columns.
