The Allred by Hallmark
Newport, ORThe Allred Hotel is a renovation and expansion project in Newport, Oregon, that transformed the former Whaler Motel into a 102-room boutique hotel overlooking Nye Beach. Completed through a design-build process, the project included the renovation of existing guestrooms and amenities, construction of 26 new guest suites, a new lobby, restaurant and bar, spa facilities, fitness amenities, outdoor gathering spaces, a parking structure, and associated site improvements.
A key feature of the project is the use of Mass Plywood Panels (MPP), showcasing locally sourced wood products and regional manufacturing. Wood is expressed throughout the building’s architecture and interiors, including cedar exterior cladding, custom millwork, and a feature stair inspired by the form of the nearby Yaquina Bay Bridge. The project team prioritized local sourcing where possible, incorporating regional wood products, artwork, furnishings, and other materials that reflect the character of Oregon’s central coast.
The redevelopment was designed to modernize the property while maintaining its connection to the surrounding coastal community. Public-facing spaces, including the hotel’s lobby café and bar, were created to serve both visitors and local residents. Sustainability strategies included the use of energy-efficient building systems, water-conserving fixtures, durable materials, and site improvements such as upgraded stormwater infrastructure.
By combining renovation with new construction, the project expanded lodging capacity, enhanced guest amenities, and demonstrated the application of mass timber and locally sourced wood products in a hospitality setting on the Oregon Coast.
