Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre

Thunder Bay, ON

The Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre is a 686,000-square-foot, 375-bed regional hospital and cancer centre completed in 2003.

Structurally, the hospital utilizes a flexible "T" layout that separates clinical departments from patient care areas to accommodate future operational adaptations without compromising core layouts. It was the first Canadian hospital to extensively feature mass timber in its public spaces, honoring its northern context, and introduced Europe's advanced Fog Fire Suppression System to the country.

The infrastructure prioritizes comprehensive wellness and sustainability through passive solar energy, and natural ventilation. Additionally, the architecture successfully introduces direct daylighting into traditionally isolated zones, including nursing stations and cancer radiation treatment bunkers, bridging technical innovation with patient-centered clinical care.
