Martin House Residence
Philadelphia, PA
This house for a young family was designed for a site at the center of a city block. It is constructed exclusively out of cross-laminated timber (CLT) and glue-laminated timber (glulam). The CLT walls and glulam columns support glulam beams, which in turn support the CLT floor plates. The glulam columns bear on concrete spread footings and are connected through the floor plates with steel pintles. The unique properties of CLT allowed for the floor plates to extent past the walls, around the perimeter of the building, to form a continuous cantilevered overhang. As well, the stairs are built from sloped CLT panels with glulam treads/risers. All the window and door openings were accommodated through the CLT wall panels, which were designed to resist the lateral loading.
