Mass Timber Expands into Large-Scale Athletic Facilities

Located in the heart of Boston, this 310,000 sq. ft, 4-storey facility will replace the historic Matthews Arena with a next-generation athletics and recreation hub designed to serve varsity sports, student recreation, and the broader community. The project will house Division I hockey and basketball programs while providing flexible spaces for fitness, events, ceremonies, and community gatherings.

What sets the project apart is its innovative use of a mass timber roof structure, demonstrating how engineered wood is moving beyond traditional institutional and commercial applications into complex, large-span sports facilities. Rather than relying solely on conventional steel construction, the project integrates CLT to reduce embodied carbon while creating a warm, biophilic environment that enhances the experience for athletes, students, and spectators alike.

The facility is pursuing both ILFI Net Zero Carbon Certification and Living Building Challenge CORE Certification, placing it among the most ambitious sustainable athletic facilities in North America. An all-electric building system, geothermal heating and cooling supported by 46 geo-exchange wells, rooftop solar panels, and a 100,000-gallon rainwater harvesting system work together with low-carbon materials—including mass timber, to dramatically reduce the building's environmental footprint.

Mass Timber Structural System
The recreation complex incorporates a prefabricated cross-laminated timber (CLT) roof system, demonstrating how engineered wood can be successfully integrated into large-span athletic facilities. The CLT roof panels reduce embodied carbon while providing the strength, precision, and construction efficiency required for a project of this scale and complexity.

As designers continue to seek lower-carbon alternatives for increasingly complex building types, projects like Northeastern University's Recreation Complex demonstrate that mass timber is no longer limited to offices, schools, or residential buildings.
