The Smart VMC Bus Terminal in Vaughan, Ontario, features a sustainable, innovative design that uses wood to offer a warm welcome to passengers. Phase one of the largest redevelopment project in North America, the terminal connects the subway station below with the suburban bus transport, serving thousands of passengers a day.
Dubbed a new kind of “urban magnet” by architect firm Diamond Schmitt, the building features a unique horseshoe-shaped roof that floats above two open, wooden platforms wrapped in glass. All of the structure’s exposed glulam beams and CLT are protected with environmentally friendly wood protection. Other eco features include a “cool roof” to reduce the urban heat-island effect, drought-tolerant landscaping, and lots of windows for natural ventilation and lighting.
