University of Fraser Valley Dining Hall Expansion

Abbotsford, BC

The UFV Dining Hall Expansion project involved the expansion and modernization of the main dining facility at UFV, preparing it to serve a growing campus community. The project expansion enhanced kitchen and dining hall capacity, adding 378m² across two levels to seat up to 350. Working closely with Turner Construction, Seagate and the project team committed early to sustainable practices that minimized the new facility's carbon footprint.

The architectural objectives for the addition were achieved through a hybrid steel/mass timber structural system. The design incorporated key features of the existing 1983 and 1993 concrete-framed structures, retaining much of the original framework while building upon it with mass timber materials, using a combination of cross-laminated timber (CLT) and glue-laminated timber (Glulam) to make up the horizontal and vertical structural elements of the building.

This project was a comprehensive undertaking due to the nature of the supply and installation of all materials, which were broken out separately for mass timber, structural steel, and fasteners. It also included intricate engineering for connections and reinforcements.

Careful coordination with the General Contractor was required to meet a fast-paced construction timeline, as well as the ability to resolve multiple changes due to consultant reviews and site conditions. The result is an exceptional mass timber structure that will support the future of UFV for generations of students to come.
