Chemistry and Applied Mathematics (CHAP) Facility

The Chemistry and Applied Mathematics (CHAP) Facility is a new interdisciplinary academic and research building at the University of Colorado Boulder designed to support chemistry, applied mathematics, and collaborative scientific research. The four-story, 139,000-square-foot facility utilizes a hybrid mass timber structural system featuring Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) floor panels and glulam beams and columns. Engineered wood was selected to reduce embodied carbon while creating a warm, high-performance learning and research environment that aligns with the university's sustainability goals. Designed to be one of the most energy-efficient research facilities in the university's history, the project demonstrates how mass timber can be successfully integrated into technically demanding laboratory and higher education facilities while providing long-span structural performance and exposed wood interiors that enhance occupant well-being.
