Wassmuth Education Center

Boise, ID

The Wassmuth Education Center provides space for community learning, gathering, and houses the daily operations of the Wassmuth Center for Human Rights, all while acting as a beacon and entrance to the Idaho Anne Frank Human Rights Memorial. The building’s design is born of the Wassmuth Center’s purpose and grounded in its context. Light pushes through clerestory windows to lift a continuous cross-laminated timber roof and give it the appearance of floating. It seeps from voids between faceted stone planes and glows through portal windows shaped to mimic the Amsterdam skyline prevalent throughout the adjacent Memorial. As the building slopes toward the river a monolithic curved wall terminates the building and provides shelter for the contemplative nature of the Memorial’s quote circles.
