John is the WoodWorks Regional Director for VA, DC, DE, MD and WV. He works directly with developers and design teams, providing education and free technical support related to the design, engineering and construction of commercial and multi-family wood buildings. A licensed Structural and Professional Engineer, he has knowledge to assist with all aspects of wood building design, including allowable heights and areas and construction types, structural detailing of wood and hybrid systems, fire resistance, acoustics, and alternate means of code compliance.

Contact John for assistance on a project or to schedule a seminar on topics that include (but aren’t limited to) an introduction to mass timber, mass timber code changes, mass timber structural design, mid-rise and taller wood buildings, fire-resistance of exposed mass timber, and detailing for Type III light-frame buildings.

John is a licensed structural engineer in Maryland. Before joining Woodworks, he enjoyed working on various projects in the capital region for clients like the Smithsonian Institute and The National Parks Service, collaborating with architects and other engineers along the way.  John is a member of Engineers Without Borders, enjoys woodworking in his free time and is passionate about the sustainable aspects of wood construction.  He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering from Penn State University close to where he grew up, and a Master of Civil Engineering Degree from Johns Hopkins University with a focus in Structural Engineering.
