1523 Harrison Street Affordable Housing Development

Oakland, CA

The 1523 Harrison Street development is an affordable multifamily housing project in downtown Oakland that uses a mass-timber structural system above a two-story concrete podium. The building incorporates nine floors of mass timber construction using Mass Plywood Panels (MPP), an engineered wood product manufactured from veneer-based timber panels. The project continues oWOW's efforts to scale mass timber housing construction in urban environments, building on lessons learned from the adjacent 1510 Webster Street tower. The timber system was selected to support faster construction schedules, reduce structural weight, and lower construction costs while delivering 284 affordable housing units within walking distance of transit and downtown amenities. The project also incorporates prefabricated structural components intended to accelerate assembly and improve construction efficiency.

It will be the tallest mass timber tower in California when completed.
