The 8,500-sf First United Bank building in Fredericksburg has the distinction of being the first full mass timber building in Texas, and the first mass timber structure in the U.S. to use CLT panels made from southern yellow pine. Gensler chose southern yellow pine over the typical Douglas fir CLT because it is native to Texas and surrounding southern states. The project also includes southern yellow pine glulam beams and columns. The panels and beams are left exposed in the lobby, community room, office spaces, and exterior overhang. The project is designed as a net zero energy structure.
