Detroit Lakes High School

Detroit Lakes, MN

A major expansion and renovation of the high school to accommodate a growing district. Three additions were added, including a new ninth-grade wing, a larger commons and administrative area, and a fieldhouse with a full-size competition gym and elevated indoor track. The design also updated classrooms (e.g. art, FACS, tech labs) and improved security and building systems. The new gymnasium features long-span hybrid wood-and-steel trusses (Douglas Fir timber combined with steel) supporting the roof structure, showcasing the use of engineered wood for strength and aesthetics. These mass timber elements, along with wood finish accents in academic areas, bring natural warmth to the modernized school environment without calling attention to any particular supplier. Overall, the project created a state-of-the-art yet inviting campus while staying on schedule and budget
