This LEED Silver-certified airport clearly distinguishes itself from the aesthetics of typical airports. The 115,500-square-foot structure features heavy-timber members, left exposed to reflect the natural beauty of nearby Grand Teton National Park. Designers selected wood for the structure because of its varied grain and color palette, as well as its ability to perform structurally under a variety of loading conditions. Solid wood Douglas-fir columns anchor the space while glulam beams dramatically span the main hall, joining the columns via detailed steel connections. Due to height restrictions, a queen post truss system was integrated with the glulam beams to reduce their depth, maximizing the spaciousness of the terminal and allowing for expansive views. The inherent fire performance of heavy timber construction was vital in allowing the wood to be exposed.
