This addition to the Mercer Mass Timber facility in Spokane Valley, WA features a hybrid steel frame with 3ply CLT walls and 5ply CLT roof. Housing a planer to enhance the facility's wood processing capabilities, the building shell is a clear diagram of its enclosure requirements fitting around the equipment and their respective clearances.
The enclosure system features 3ply CLT walls fastened from the interior to perimeter WF structural steel. The walls additionally sit on a short concrete stem wall, on top of which is a continuous embed angle for base of wall attachment. Steel columns were factory drilled to ease wood screw fastening through the flanges. The wall panels are generally 10'-6" x 40'-0" with a double span over the structure at 20' on center. The 5ply roof panels follow a similar dimensional logic. The project team worked closely with the CLT manufacturer to dial in the common master panel dimensions to increase efficiency.
