Butchart Gardens Rose Carousel
Brentwood Bay, BCThe Rose Carousel at The Butchart Gardens in Victoria, BC, is a carefully integrated timber, concrete, and glass structure designed to create a welcoming gathering space within the surrounding forest and garden landscape. The building combines a curved concrete enclosure with a transparent, circular pavilion, allowing the architecture to feel connected to the gardens while creating a destination for visitors. Within the building there are supporting spaces that include areas for children's events, concessions, and gatherings that are arranged around the central carousel.
A defining feature of the children's pavilion is its exposed Glulam structural system. Pairs of glulam columns support a series of curved and straight beams that form the buildings distinctive domed roof. The timber framing creates a strong geometric shape overhead while allowing the structure to remain visible through the interior. The use of exposed wood continues throughout the ceiling and interior finishes that complement the outside landscape.
