Gallivan, SK

Sweetgrass school is a new 41,667 square foot K-12 school located on Sweetgrass First Nation in Saskatchewan, designed to be a modern, culturally grounded learning environment for students and the community. The school includes 12 classrooms, a daycare, head start program, a cree language room, combined science and multipurpose room, a resource room, and full gymnasium with a mezzanine level indoor track. Inspired by the surrounding prairie landscape, the design incorporates natural materials, including Douglas Fir glulam beams, westdeck/panel GLT, clay brick and abundant daylight into many of the spaces. The project was developed through lots of community engagement and Wallace Krueger Architects, the school reflects Indigenous Culture while supporting an inclusive learning for all students. The school was designed to achieve the Canada Green Buildings Net Zero Carbon Ready standard, it is the first commercial building in Saskatchewan to achieve this standard.

The glulam beams and GLT decking/paneling are installed throughout the west wing, lobby, southern classrooms, and east wing, with structural sheathing continuing across the room. Glulam is also going to be supporting the second-level running track and high roof structure in the gymnasium.
