The Wharf at Point Loma, America’s Cup Harbor

San Diego, CA

The Wharf at Point Loma, located in San Diego's America's Cup Harbor, is a 30,000-square-foot mixed-use development designed by The Miller Hull Partnership. This project is the first of several planned along the Point Loma waterfront and promenade, aiming to transform the working waterfront marina experience with contemporary workspaces and restaurant/retail sites. The design features a series of 'fingers' extending toward a public promenade, creating interactive spaces that blend public and private use. These structures engage directly with the walkway, offering restaurant access and sun-sheltered seating areas, while providing occupants with some of the most remarkable waterfront views in the city. Between buildings, the promenade expands into combined-use spaces that vary from green parks to sheltered breezeways and active plazas with amenities like fire pits, offering diverse experiences for all visitors.

At the heart of the project’s architectural expression is its use of glulam columns and beams, which provide both structural performance and a warm, tactile character that connects the site to San Diego’s maritime heritage. These glulam components not only reduce the project’s carbon footprint but also help define the public and private spaces with a material palette that feels both contemporary and timeless. Paired with its integration into the adjacent Point Loma Marina and promenade, The Wharf creates a unique, wood-forward destination that celebrates the past while setting a new standard for the future of waterfront development.

In 2018, almost 10 years after the structure was completed, Miller Hull moved into one of the leasable spaces at the Wharf. The tenant improvement is Petal Certified under the Living Building Challenge, achieving 6 of the 7 petals and is Net Zero Energy Certified. The mass timber elements of the project contributed significantly to the project's Beauty, Health and Happiness and Materials Petal Certifications.
