University of Oregon Hatfield Dowlin Complex Expansion

The University of Oregon’s Hatfield-Dowlin Complex Expansion—known as “2.MO”—is a 170,000-square-foot indoor athletics training facility located beside Autzen Stadium in Eugene. Designed by Olson Kundig and constructed by Hoffman Construction, the project combines a 130,000-square-foot indoor practice field with approximately 40,000 square feet of supporting spaces for strength and conditioning, sports medicine, nutrition, film study, classrooms, and player amenities.

Mass timber is central to both the architecture and identity of the facility. Its sweeping curved roof draws inspiration from the Oregon “O” while expressing the region’s strong connection to forests and wood construction. The hybrid structural system incorporates locally manufactured mass plywood panels (MPP), cross-laminated timber (CLT), steel, and concrete, demonstrating how engineered wood can be deployed at the scale and span required for a major collegiate sports facility. Daylight and ventilation are integrated into the roof design, reinforcing the warmth and natural character of the exposed timber while supporting a high-performance training environment.

More than a structural solution, the timber establishes a distinctly Pacific Northwest character and transforms the building into an expression of place, material innovation, and Oregon athletics. The expansion also includes relocated outdoor practice fields and improvements to surrounding circulation, accessibility, parking, and natural areas. Completion is currently identified for 2027.
