Packer Collegiate Institute Garden House Expansion

Brooklyn, NY

First founded in 1845, Packer Collegiate in an independent PreK-12 school in Lower Manhattan. As part of the evolution of its historic campus, the school has undertaken a long-term Campus Master Plan. The first part of this plan is the renovation and expansion of their Garden House and Garden.

In lieu of carbon and steel, the project used cross-laminated timber (CLT) for the 3-storey addition to an existing 3-storey brick mason and wood joist-framed building. The addition includes a basement, cellar and bulkhead and is framed with CLT floors and glulam columns and beams. The expansion includes 9,900 SF of mass timber.

The total expansion size is 17,000 sq. ft., which will more than double its current size and will host classrooms, flex room, breakout spaces and offices.
