Umpqua Community College Southern Oregon Wine Institute

The project's design drew inspiration from the beautiful campus setting in the hill country of Southern Oregon. The mass timber framing and finishes, dramatic curved glue-laminated (glulam) beams, and wood decking for roof framing pay homage to the strong tradition of building with wood in one of Oregon's historically rich, forestry-based economies.

The primary goal was to create a dynamic new facility to serve as the home of the Southern Oregon Wine Institute, a program focused on supporting economic development in Southern Oregon's wine industry.

The new facility sits on a dramatic overlook on an undeveloped hillside at the edge of the college campus. The building location was carefully integrated with the site design, so it is optimally situated relative to the adjacent teaching vineyards and oriented for light and views. 

The Wine Institute facility provides space for a functional teaching winery, plus classrooms, offices, labs, and a wine tasting room with retail space. Flex-use spaces allow for public uses such as weddings, conferences, and other events. The new UCC Danny Lang Teaching, Learning, and Event Center is truly a mixed-use resource for the college and the communities of southern Oregon that the institution serves.
