Frederic Church Center for Art and Landscape
Hudson, NYLocated at the entrance to the historic Olana State Historic Site in Hudson, New York, this 5400-square-foot project serves as a welcoming gateway to the landscape, art, and environmental legacy of Frederic Edwin Church.
Designed by Architecture Research Office (ARO), the all-electric building utilizes a mass timber structural system consisting of exposed glue-laminated timber (glulam) columns and beams paired with cross-laminated timber (CLT) roof panels. The wood structure provides both structural efficiency and architectural character, creating warm, naturally lit interiors that connect visitors to the surrounding Hudson Valley landscape.
The glulam framing creates flexible, column-free gathering spaces capable of supporting exhibitions, educational programming, community events, and everyday visitor activities. Large areas of glazing work in concert with the timber structure to maximize daylight, strengthen connections to the landscape, and create an inviting public environment.
The project also highlights the role mass timber can play in reducing embodied carbon in public buildings. Combined with the building's all-electric design, the renewable wood structure supports broader sustainability objectives while showcasing how modern timber systems can meet the performance, durability, and aesthetic requirements of high-profile civic projects. As one of New York State's first publicly accessible mass timber facilities, the Frederic Church Center for Art and Landscape provides a valuable model for owners, architects, and engineers exploring wood solutions for visitor centers, museums, parks, and community buildings.
