Jefferson High School Modernization

Portland, OR

The Jefferson High School Modernization project is a complete replacement of the existing historic high school campus in North Portland and represents one of the largest mass timber K-12 education projects in the Pacific Northwest. The new approximately 297,000-square-foot facility is designed to serve more than 1,700 students and incorporates a highly visible mass timber structural system featuring Dowel-Laminated Timber (DLT) and glulam framing. The use of mass timber supports Portland Public Schools' sustainability goals by reducing embodied carbon while creating a warm, healthy, and biophilic learning environment. Exposed timber structural elements throughout classrooms, commons spaces, and gathering areas are intended to enhance student wellness, improve occupant experience, and celebrate Oregon's forest products industry. The project is expected to become a landmark example of mass timber use in public K-12 education.
