Flatiron PDX is a timber-framed mixed-use building sited at the edge of a sloping triangular site in north Portland. The five floor plates each offer offer 5,000 sf of open loft space framed with timber columns and beams, and CLT floors with concrete topping slabs. The unique triangular geometry and significant grade change across the site inspired the idea of lacing together three formally independent elevations, resulting in a weave of bay windows and open space at the corners. CLT decking was chosen for its unique ability to simplify the structural requirements of the corner geometries. Because CLT is two-directional in strength, the design team was able to use the material to create the laced corners with double cantilever balconies and projections.
