Kellogg Middle School is the first acoustic DLT system installation in the U.S., where the wood panels are utilized for a combination of structure, finish, and acoustical control. Acoustic DLT is unique in that sound-absorbing fiber insulation is added to the panels. This is accomplished in the factory, by using CNC tools to rout out thin channels between the laminations, and inserting acoustic insulation in the cavities. This unique process can be used to achieve a noise reduction coefficient as high as 0.7. At Kellogg, the acoustic profile was utilized to showcase the wood structure without the need for an additional acoustic ceiling. The largest DLT panels in this project are nearly forty feet long by six and a half feet wide. The panels were prefabricated and efficiently flat-packed to the construction site, where they were erected in just two weeks. A small gap was left between the panels to provide an integrated space for electrical, lighting and other systems.
