Michigan Department of Natural Resources Newberry Customer Service Center & Storage Facility

Newberry, MI

Located in Newberry, Michigan, this 10,000-square-foot mass timber structure marks a significant step forward for sustainable construction in the state. It’s the first project in Michigan to utilize locally sourced Michigan Red Pine for both the roof and wall CLT panels—a milestone for regional forestry and material innovation. Structurally, the building features 37 glulam columns, 60 beams, 45 CLT wall panels, and 48 CLT roof panels, all working together to create a warm, durable, and high-performing space.

A standout element of the project is the custom site-fabricated nail-laminated timber (NLT) feature wall, which adds depth and visual interest to the interior. The use of mass timber not only supports a low-carbon construction approach, but also showcases the potential of regional species in modern building systems. As the first of its kind in Michigan, the project sets a strong precedent for future timber construction in the Upper Midwest.
