Smith College - Northhampton, MA
Northampton, MAThis three-story academic building consolidates Smith College’s career development and leadership programs into a collaborative campus hub overlooking Paradise Pond.
Mass Timber Approach
A hybrid mass timber and steel structural system uses prefabricated components to streamline installation within an active campus while expressing wood as both structure and finish.
Mass timber was integral to the building’s sustainability strategy, selected to reduce embodied carbon and serve as a clear, visible expression of Smith’s climate commitments.
Sustainability & Performance
Designed to be net-zero ready and targeting LEED Gold certification, the building integrates renewable structural materials and connects to campus geothermal infrastructure.
Project Impact
As Smith College’s first mass timber building, the project establishes a new model for smaller-scale academic facilities aligned with institutional climate commitments.
