Glens Falls Events Downtown Center

Glens Falls, NY

Design Excellence Using Wood: Commissioned by the City of Glens Falls as the centerpiece of its Downtown Revitalization Initiative, the Glens Falls ED (Events Downtown) Center establishes a new civic landmark adjacent to the Three Squares Historic District. The building’s expressive massing and material clarity create a deliberate dialogue between historic masonry context and contemporary timber construction. Exposed glulam structure, warm wood interiors, and a split roof form lend the building a strong architectural identity while maintaining a human scale appropriate to its civic role. At night, the clerestory illuminates the timber structure from within, transforming the building into a visible and welcoming beacon for the downtown.

Innovative Use of Wood: The project leverages glulam not only as a structural system but as the primary architectural driver. Precision-fabricated glulam elements enable long spans and column-free flexibility, allowing the interior market hall to seamlessly expand into adjacent outdoor space through nineteen overhead tilt-up doors. This hybrid indoor–outdoor condition transforms a compact 6,000-square-foot enclosed building into a 34,000-square-foot event venue during warm months, demonstrating how mass
timber can support adaptable, seasonally responsive civic infrastructure.

Sustainability and Resilience Through Glulam Construction: Glulam construction underpins the project’s environmental performance, resilience, and longevity. The renewable nature of mass timber, combined with efficient fabrication and reduced material waste, aligns with the project’s goals of creating open, sustainable infrastructure. Passive ventilation strategies, abundant daylighting, durable low-maintenance finishes, and energy-conscious systems support long-term operational efficiency. Green infrastructure manages
stormwater on site, reducing municipal load and increasing resilience to extreme weather while protecting adjacent historic properties.

Market Impact and Replicability: Since opening, the Glens Falls Farmers Market has experienced its most successful season in decades, confirming the building’s catalytic impact on both economic activity and public life. The structure has been widely embraced by the community, with its timber form incorporated into local branding, marketing, and civic identity. As a highly visible, cost-effective, and flexible mass timber civic building, the project demonstrates a replicable model for small cities seeking to revitalize downtowns, support local agriculture, and invest in durable, wood-based public infrastructure.
