International Peace Gardens Cactus Observatory
Dunseith, NDThe International Peace Garden Conservatory Expansion is a high volume greenhouse facility, designed to support one of the worlds most diverse collections of cacti and succulents. Spanning over the Canadian and U.S. border of Manitoba and North Dakota, the project celebrates peace and cooperation while expanding the conservatory's capacity for plant preservation, education, and public engagement. The project spans approximately 12,500 square feet of new conservatory and exhibition space.
Spruce glulam forms the primary structural framework of the conservatory addition, providing the strength and durability required for the expansive greenhouse space. The exposed timber structure contrasts with the transparent polycarbonate enclosure, creating a bright, light filled space showcasing the architecture and plant collection.
The project was recognized with a 2024 Prairie Design Award of Merit, highlighting its contribution to innovation design and cross border collaboration.
