John Burroughs Elementary School Modernization – Mass Timber Addition
Washington, DCThe John Burroughs Elementary School modernization in Washington, D.C. incorporates mass timber into a major renovation and expansion of the historic school campus. The new timber scope includes approximately 24,700 square feet of construction using CLT panels with glulam columns and beams. The prefabricated timber system is being erected as part of the broader modernization, which expands and reorganizes the campus while preserving significant portions of the original 1920s school. Mass timber is used prominently within the new addition and courtyard/common spaces, introducing exposed wood structure into the learning environment while supporting efficient installation and lower-carbon construction. The project is targeting LEED Gold and will increase the school's overall area to approximately 95,000 square feet.
