The design concept of the new Senior & Community Center reflects the Senior and Community priorities and five years of work with the Redmond community, stakeholders, and seniors. Highlights of the current design include:
- Senior-dedicated spaces, including a Lounge & Library
- A large multipurpose Community Room and commercial kitchen featuring flexible layouts to accommodate the senior nutrition program, events, banquets, lectures, cultural events, performances, and other recreation activities
- Active recreation areas, including flexible gym space, group exercise studio, an elevated indoor walk/jog track, and stretching area
- Locker rooms, showers, restrooms, a lactation room
- Classroom spaces for art, music, games
- Meeting rooms for community use
- A Kids Zone for Redmond’s youngest community members
The building design has been thoughtfully planned with integrated sustainability measures:
- The building will be LEED certified, with materials being selected for their resilience and durability, and will be sourced locally when possible.
- Efficient mechanical, plumbing, electrical, windows/doors, and appliances have been selected.
- A rooftop solar panel installation will provide 50% of the energy needed to operate the building. The solar panels are an opportunity for the Redmond community and businesses to get involved. More information about becoming a Solar Champion is here.
The project architects, landscape designer, and engineers worked together to develop the design of the exterior of the building while also incorporating existing assets, such as the outdoor pickleball courts, heritage trees, and the expansion grassy areas that will continue to be used for community events, picnicking, classes and summer camp activities.
The current exterior design features include:
- Large windows and natural light
- Concrete walls and mass-plywood panels (MPP) sitting on glue-laminated beams and columns
- Warm colors and panels
- Design elements that blend into the surroundings
- Multiple outdoor terraces
- Outdoor vegetable gardening
