Writing-On-Stone Provincial Park

Milk River, AB

Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park Visitor Centre provides a gateway to one of Alberta's most culturally and environmentally significant landscapes. Developed to welcome visitors while honouring the areas Indigenous heritage, the centre was designed to complement its surroundings and create a meaningful connection between the built environment and the natural prairie landscape. Inspired by the form of a tipi, the structure contains historical artifacts and cultural displays that celebrate the stories and connection to the land.

Exposed glulam beams create a striking vaulted interior that fills the space with natural daylight and enhances the visitor experience. The roof was engineered to collect and manage stormwater, helping reduce soil erosion while protecting the surrounding landscape. The combination of sustainable design strategies and engineered timber creates a welcoming, durable, and visually distinctive building. It reflects both the cultural significance of the site and the beauty of the surrounding prairie.
