Ronald McDonald House Expansion - Ottawa

The Ronald McDonald House Ottawa Expansion is a 25,555 sq. ft., three-storey addition that nearly doubles the facility's capacity, increasing the number of family suites from 14 to 36. Located just steps from the local hospital, the project will allow more families to stay together and remain close to their children during medical treatment.

Designed to meet ambitious sustainability and accessibility goals, the expansion is targeting LEED Gold certification, Zero Carbon Building standards, and Rick Hansen Foundation Accessibility Certification.

Mass Timber Creates a Warm, Sustainable Environment
The mass timber for the project includes cross-laminated timber (CLT) floor and roof panels and Glulam beams and columns. 

The project incorporates approximately 340 m³ of CLT and 31.8 m³ of Glulam, manufactured offsite and delivered ready for installation. The use of prefabricated mass timber helped improve construction efficiency while creating warm, welcoming interior spaces that support the project's family-centered mission.

Expanding Support for Families
The new addition includes expanded communal living areas, kitchens, dining spaces, and accessible amenities, all designed to provide comfort and connection during difficult times. Once complete, Ronald McDonald House Ottawa will be able to accommodate more than 1,300 family visits annually.

By combining mass timber construction with sustainable design principles, the project demonstrates how low-carbon building solutions can help create resilient, community-focused facilities that make a meaningful difference in people's lives.
